Beginners Surf Foam Waves

Beginners surf foam waves by learning rhythm and timing. Before beginners learn to surf, they don’t realize the timing of the steps to recognize waves, get in position, catch the wave, and then pop up on the board. They often try to do everything at once.

Instructing beginners is mostly getting them to slow down, be patient, and follow a sequence. Their minds are filled with adrenaline and they think everything has to be fast.

The Beginner Basics on Foam Waves

Look for the rhythm and timing. Recognize a good foam wave. Beginners start in waste deep water, they do not paddle out and try for real waves or big foam waves. They spot a good foam wave as it is a straight line of foam and not a mess of several waves coming together.

When the wave is spotted, the surfer waits until it is about 20′ feet away. He rolls onto the surfboard with feet at the back, the body pencil straight in the middle, and begins paddling immediately. When the wave is close, he paddles hard. The wave lifts the tail and points the nose down.

The surfer paddles about three times hard using his forearms not his hands. When the nose rises onto the flat plain he puts his hands on the board in a man’s push up position next to his chest. If the surfer puts his hands on the board too soon or in front of his shoulders, the nose will go under water, called pearling.

Then the surfer can proceed through the correct pop up and ride to the beach. In the early stages, the surfer is looking to ride straight without falling off. After this is mastered, he can start paddling out for bigger foam waves and begin seeking small real waves.
