Beginner Surfers Learn on Foam Waves
Beginner Surfers Learn on Foam Waves because fundamentals are important and easier to learn in easier conditions. Beginners also learn on soft top surfboards in Oceanside, CA.
Oceanside has a good foam wave after the real waves break. They allow a long ride and they are mild in comparison to starting on real waves. Beginners in other areas and countries are often paddling out to real waves and not learning.
The Fundamentals Learned on Foam Waves
One of the keys to riding waves is the timing of catching them. Real waves break in a few seconds and you have to understand positioning the surfboard. Foam waves can be seen for a distance and catching them is much easier.
A foam waves pushes the surfboard and a real wave can crash on the surfer, so real waves are very intimidating for a beginner. As the foam wave is approaching the surfer, he rolls over on his surfboard and begins paddling easy to get momentum.
As the wave gets close to the tail, the surfer paddles hard for three strokes. He wants to get the tail out of the foam by accelerating, but wants to put his hands on the board at peak speed. Three hard paddles with the forearms is usually sufficient.
As the surfer feels the board take off, he puts his hands in a man’s push up position next to his chest. Then he pushes up and places one foot (rear foot) on the board flat and under his butt. Many new surfers have flexibility issues and can’t get the foot flat on the board and far enough forward to stand on it.
As the surfer starts to stand up, he raises his hands to make way for the other foot moving to the nose. Beginners tend to hold on until both feet are on the board. This places the head in front of the toes in a down dog position. The surfer then flies off the front.
The Right Stance and Riding to the Beach
The objective for a beginner on foam waves is to ride straight to the beach in the proper posture. Mastering this process enables him to progress to the next steps. The correct stance for beginners is feet shoulder width apart (3′). The hips and shoulders have to be squared to the front.
He doesn’t want a shoulder trailing like in snow or skateboarding. This would place weight on the heels and rail of the board causing a fall. He doesn’t want to be on the back of the board forcing the nose up. This occurs because the surfer didn’t release his hands so the front foot could get to the nose and it winds up behind the arms.
Once in the right stance, it is easy to ride straight with little work. After this, the surfer paddles out to bigger foam waves and eventually to catch small real waves.
