Beginner Surfers Progress on the Soft Top by building strength, skills, and courage. The three work together to make progress possible.
Surfing is a full body sport. It requires strength, flexibility, and stamina. These can be built with a few good exercises. The main three are pushups, squats, and dead lifts. The latter two can be performed without weights. They will strengthen the legs and loosen the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back.
Stamina is best achieved with aerobics. Building duration improves the cardio system and building speed accelerates the muscles ability to soak up glucose. The more glucose stored in muscle, the better the stamina.
Learning Technique and Developing Courage
Technique is important to advance. The beginner must land the pop up squarely on the board and ride straight to the beach without falling off. Beginners without lessons have difficulty learning to do this. Surfing is more technical than most people imagine.
Once the surfer can ride straight to the beach, he can start paddling out for bigger foam waves and small real waves. In this process, he is getting comfortable with the ocean and developing courage. Courage has to be developed because riding real waves is a challenge.
Sticking with the soft top board for as long as possible is advised. If you start on a 9′ board, try to move to an 8′. The 8′ surf board will ride 7′ waves, so there is no necessity to move to a hard board right away. Always keep it fun.
