Surfing Soft Tops on Foam and Real Waves

riding foam and real waves on soft top surfboards.

Surfing Soft Tops on Foam and Real Waves is fun and easy. Surfers who can’t surf frequently can stick with the soft top board forever and have great fun and an easier time in the water.

The beauty of a soft top board is they have volume to make everything easier and they perform well in foam and real waves. They are great on small days and can handle big real waves.

The beginner learns the fundamentals of catching waves, doing a pop up and riding to the beach in foam waves. Then he progresses to paddling out through the foam waves to turn around and catch bigger foam waves. At this point he is mastering wave timing, catching foam waves, and the pop up .

Progressing to Real Waves

This is a big step in timing and courage more than anything else. The foam wave can be seen approaching and caught at any spot. The real wave breaks in a few seconds and has to be caught at the point it arcs.

Beginners start on small real waves of 2′ to 3′. They let the wave roll under the board and paddle hard, just like with foam waves. As the board starts to move down the wave, the surfer executes his pop up. Beginners are usually unnerved by the downward descent and the speed.

After catching and becoming comfortable with smaller real waves, the surfer can progress to a bigger wave. This is the progress taken. Bigger waves move faster and have more weight. The crashes are more impactful with bigger waves. But the surfer is learning technique and becomes competent at each level.

Two other techniques exist for catching real waves on soft top boards. In Oceanside, the waves are steep on the sand bar beach. Surfers often catch the wave and before popping up, push the nose toward the pocket. This gives them a head start on the falling lip.

Another good process for intermediate surfers and on big days when waves are to scary for the surfer, is to catch them in the corners. The surfer paddles toward the pocket after it has already broken and is rolling out in one direction or the other.

The surfer is timing the pocket. The pocket will keep getting closer to shore as it rolls. The surfer positions in a 45-degree angle as he is paddling and lets the wave roll under the surfboard. He stays at that 45-degree angle to ride.

The soft top surfboard is competent in waves up to 7′ for the advanced surfer and many have ridden much bigger waves just to see if it can be accomplished.
