First Lessons on a Surfing Shortboard
The First Lessons on a Surfing Shortboard are the basics for advancement. If surfers have been riding higher volume boards like soft tops or fun boards (6’11” to 9′), they will first realize that paddling is more difficult and the lower volume boards are less stable.
A third consideration is that the lower volume board needs more wave power to ride so the wave has to be steeper at the launch point. This is a big learning point from riding smaller real waves or foam waves. The timing is important.
The First Lessons on a Surfing Shortboard
The timing of catching a real wave is crucial and surfers try to improve this all their lives. Each wave is different and the surfer learns to judge. For a shortboard, the wave has to come under the board and as the peak is overhead and the nose pointed down, the surfer paddles hard.
Going straight down the face, the surfer executes a bottom turn to get into the pocket. He turns his eyes and upper torso toward the turn and places pressure on the toes or heels on that side of the board. Regulars carving right will pressure their toes.
Then the surfer has to accelerate to get ahead of the falling lip and to perform maneuvers. He pushes the nose of the surfboard up and down the face a few times. Now he has the speed to perform the first maneuver.
The cut back is a tool in every short board arsenal. He reverses direction to get back to the power of the wave. He turns his eyes and then upper torso down the wave and pressure on the toes or heels nearest the bottom of the wave and carves a reverse.
Ripping the lip is where short boarders spend a lot of time. The surfer bottom turns up the face and then performs a cut back to get back down the face. After each maneuver, the surfer accelerates a few times before the next trick.
