How Long Does it Take to Surf The Short Board
New surfers have often been attracted by the short board surfers they see in movies and they want to know How Long Does it Take to Surf the Short Board. It, of course, depends on how often you can get to the water .
The transition from beginner learning on a soft top to advanced surfer riding a short board takes a lot of time and many progressions. Surfers have to become more skilled, stronger, and have more courage. All three are demanded to progress.
Learning the Skills
The skills that have to be learned start with timing waves and learning the pop up. Beginners in Oceanside Surf Lessons start in waist deep water rolling onto their surfboards as the foam waves approach. They learn the beginner pop up and want to ride to the beach.
After this step, they are paddling out to bigger foam waves. They are still on the 9′ soft top or by now have learned to ride the 8′ soft top. After a few more practice sessions they can start looking for small real waves. They learn to ride down the face of 2′ to 3′ real waves.
As they move to bigger real waves, they can start catching the wave and then before popping up, push the nose of the board toward the pocket. This reduces pearling and helps surfers get ahead of the falling lip. They can also paddle to the corners and catch the wave where it is smaller.
When is it Time to Move Shorter
Surfers can learn the maneuvers on an 8′ soft top. They can learn to bottom turn into the pocket, cut back to return to the power of the wave, and accelerate for speed before performing tricks. 8′ soft tops are capable of riding 7′ waves with advanced surfers.
At this point, the surfer could consider a hard board. He starts with a 7’6″ fun board that is 21″+ wide and 2 3/4″ thick. As he learns everything again on this board, he can start reducing the length of boards by 6″ at a time. At 6’10” he is riding a short board.
No reason to be in a big hurry. Going slow and learning everything along the way helps move faster. Going too fast can result in frustration and giving up. Enjoy the stoke along the way.
