What You Learn in a 2 Hour Surf Lesson

You can learn a lot in a 2 hour surf lesson. First you have to master the fundamentals. Then you learn to paddle out through waves to catch bigger ones. Finally you can learn to ride real waves and carve.

Start with the Fundamentals

The first four fundamentals are first paddling straight balanced on the surf board. Second is learning to catch waves. Third is standing up on the surf board with the beginner pop up. Fourth is riding the surf board in the right posture and stance.

There is a lot to learn and it isn’t always easy. The better physical shape a student is in, the easier it is. Surfing is physical. Upper body strength, core strength, flexibility, stamina, and good body composition all help.

Paddling Through Waves

Once a student has learned the basics, they can start paddling through waves to get the next ones. This is where students learn to judge which waves they could ride and how to handle their surf boards among the waves. At this point the student is learning how to turn around, judge the arrival of the next wave, and then putting together the first four fundamentals.

Catching Real Waves

Further progress is made by learning to catch small real waves and how to carve on the ride in on foam waves. Paddling is the most tiring aspect of surfing and after two hours, students arms and shoulders are very tired. Time for lunch and a nap.
